This is especially relevant to nursing for many reasons. In the past, we have seen an eradication of certain diseases due to vaccination, therefore society as a whole is aware of the benefits. The flu however has different strains every year and we have seen the importance of being advocates for vaccines as nurses. The use of trivalent vaccines that contain three strains of flu can greatly reduce the spread of the flu to vulnerable populations (Cannon, 2018). The elderly population, expectant mothers and children are all at risk for needing more extensive treatment as a result of catching the flu. Therefore, our duty as nurses is to educate the general public about the importance of the flu vaccine. When patients are aware that the need for vaccination does not end with them, they may feel more compelled to vaccinate. This, in turn, will reduce the number of patients in the hospital for avoidable illnesses. And will also lead to less exacerbation of symptoms in those who are already ill.
