How would you respond to this? The most challenging thing about being a nurse is the idea that our care has to be fiscally sound. I wish money grew on trees. Unfortunately, that is not the case, and we have limited funds. Because of this, we must make sure every dollar we spend is done wisely and with the maximum effect. The purpose of this post is to discuss three business principles that are needed to provide quality care, why I chose them, how they are used in my business, and why they are essential. Business principles are essential when trying to ensure a successful business. Not only so that we can make money and stay prosperous but because we want to build a business that serves the needs of others. Business principles include identifying our core demographic, providing services that meet their needs and expectations, maintaining fiscal security, and taking care of those we employ (Fischer, 2008). The principles that struck me as most important in the healthcare realm included maintaining our integrity, setting goals, and persevering through tough times (Fischer, 2008). I chose these principles because, in healthcare, these are the principles that will lead to safe and high-quality patient care that is efficient and will lead to fiscal solvency. Roadblocks, failures, and missteps are aspects of any organization’s journey. Perseverance is what we must have to overcome life’s learning lessons as the organization grows and changes (Mason et al., 2021). The tough times happen more often than we like. Our patients go through tough times, and when serving them, we sometimes go through tough times. In healthcare, it is crucial to stay on the course and weather the tough times with our patients, helping them heal. As we traverse these times as a business, we can also learn about our weaknesses and solidify our business model. I work for a large healthcare company; we just experienced such challenging times with the onset of Covid-19. During this time frame, we suspended precertification for all post-acute services. This created a financial hit for our company. Still, we were able to weather this tough time serving our customers and providers, working to move people out of the acute facilities to other levels of care to make room for the increased acute bed availability. Persevering taught us areas we needed to improve, such as speed and accuracy of utilization and precertification reviews. With this information, they have invested in a new computer program that will connect directly with hospital electronic health records and use artificial intelligence to review cases in hopes of increasing the speed and accuracy of reviews. My claim to my fame has been in the setting of goals. The organization I work for believes in setting goals as much as I do. As a business practice, setting a goal should be initiated on day one and reviewed each year. Goals help keep us on track. They should not be set in stone, but they provide us with a path and keep the organization focused on where it wants to be and the steps to get there. Goals also keep people on the same page (Mason et al., 2021). Goals are like an outline when writing a paper. They are the steps you take to reach that ultimate goal and, thus, essential to your ultimate plan (Mason et al., 2021). In healthcare, goals ensure we are treating our patients at the highest level and continue to grow in our ability to care for our patients. My organization frequently keeps us updated on its goals, where we are in the plan, and where we are going. As an employee, this has always helped me have faith and see my company’s vision. It also helps me better understand my role and how it fits into this vision. Letting us know the company’s goals helps us prepare for change and be more versatile as employees. Without goal setting, I would not be here working on my bachelor’s degree in nursing. Goals are fundamental to direct us and keep us growing. In this world of social media and the internet, a customer’s opinion has a large platform and impacts a company’s reputation, which can, in turn, cause it to underperform. In the insurance world, the opinions and how others view is tantamount to our success. My company believes so heartedly in integrity that it is the first mentioned in its core values (UnitedHealth Group [UHG], 2022). Integrity to my company is its honor; it is shown in their being transparent and honest, following through on commitments, and keeping their promises while remaining ethical in everything they do (UHG, 2022). Integrity is not just what we do for our customers; it can also be in how we treat our employees (Prottas & Nummelin, 2018). How employees view their employer significantly impacts their performance and can affect their engagement (Prottas & Nummelin, 2018). My organization not only considers how our customers and providers view them, but they also care what their employees think. Twice a year, they have an employee engagement survey asking us how we view our jobs, our managers, and the company as a workplace. They take these surveys seriously and consistently work to correct low resulted areas. We hold patients and families in our hands while at their worst and most invulnerable state; having integrity in what we do is essential. They trust us, and we should honor that trust. Integrity and ethics define me as an individual, and to work for a company that also makes it a priority is comforting. SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE NURSING NRSE 4600
