What is a response? The population health

What is a response? The population health topic that I would like to discuss is the opioid crisis. Thousands of people in the United States are affected by the opioid crisis. Many people that are part of this crisis may not even realize. As you walk down the street you may see a person high on drugs or another one laying there; you take a second glance to check for breathing. It is easy to spot these people as part of the crisis but what about the post operative knee that was just prescribed an opioid for pain, but they already are taking one for back pain. Mixing prescription drugs and illegal drugs are just a few of the many examples that is contributing to the opioid crisis (Understanding the Epidemic, 2022). Many Americans can be putting themselves at risk without even knowing. It amazes me that with the amount of outside communication, knowledge and education we have many people continue to put unknown substances in their body. Some even continue to trust blindly without a second thought to why they are being prescribed this medication and does it cause complications with my other medications. As this crisis grows in America, it has landed on several presidential agendas. The opioid crisis started back in 1990 and has continued to grow since (Understanding the Epidemic, 2022). With a growing crisis the solution is not easy. Several presidents have added the opioid crisis to their agenda with little to no effect of slowing it down. President Trump had set up a 3-step plan to help: first combat access/consumer education, second cracking down on imported drugs, and third support for treatment (Ending America’s Opioid Crisis, 2018). Recently, President Biden has set up a 5-step plan to fight ongoing issues with the opioid crisis. Bidens 5-step plan includes first increase access to all recovery services, second stop overprescribing, third reform the justice system, fourth crack down on imported drugs, and fifth hold people accountable for their role in the opioid crisis (The Biden Plan to End the Opioid Crisis, 2022). As I researched and studied this topic, I realize that there is no one fix to help manage this crisis. The opioid crisis is a multifaceted issue, and we need to come together with our ideas to help combat this crisis. Both presidential plans have great points, and I would not change anything about them, however, I would add to each. My presidential agenda would include the implementation of setting goals to help decrease the use of opioids. Goal setting would be done in all fields that deal with the opioid crisis including rehabs, office visits, discharge planning, and recovery services. While I was a home health nurse, I did goal setting with all my patients that were on opioids. Setting expectations that opioids are for short term use is key in preventing addiction and overuse. The next thing that I would add would be more accountability at all levels. Every day at work in the operating room there are a couple patients a day that are on illegal drugs. While I do not expect health care workers to do anything but take great care of these patients, illegal drugs should not be the normal. Harder consequences should be enforced for illegal drug use. There should be accountability on an individual level. Participating in illegal things including drugs should have consequences. Bringing all our ideas together is the only way that we are going to decrease the affect the opioid crisis has on American families. SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE NURSING NRP 555
