Life is looking up and you migrate to the city and get a government job that comes with a good pension.but if you were Analyn you might not get to go to good school,she finds work informally at the market and uses any spare money to make sure her children get the education she did’t. Halima she developed a fistula while giving birth to her son and was not able to have simple repair surgery. Her husband threw her out of the house and she can not find work due to her incontinence. She provides unpaid care for her older sister. Though Halima now has hypertension , the medicine she needs is unaffordable. And now Analyn is losing her sight and has stopped working at the market.with no savings she is worried about being a burden on her children. However the government introduced a limited social pension which now helps her buy food and medicine. Varuns family refused to accept his gender identity and forced him to leave home. Living on the streets he has been the victim of physical attacks and has struggles to find work, a Community health program helped him deal with skin infections. But his isolation and social marginalization means he has become depressed as an older transgender man. And following many years of unhealthy eating and a sedentary lifestyle in the city, jose was recently diagnosed with diabetes. Since retiring he has been feeling loss of a sense of purpose and increasingly isolated. As he lacked social connections outside of work but has joined a community group to make new friends. We all experience ageing in a different way. We benefit from growing experience and knowledge and form meaningful family and social relationship. But we also carry the cumulative impact of challenging life experience and discrimination that we have experience along the way.
