Reply to these two discussions 1-I’m going

Reply to these two discussions 1-I’m going to start my response this week by saying I have read this book, and it was not a good outcome for society. “Made to Order” babies are a thing of science fiction, but that fiction is rapidly becoming a reality. Critics say that this practice is frivolous but not unethical. I disagree. I believe that this practice is both frivolous and unethical. The definition of frivolous is something that is done without a real purpose. If trait selection was being used only to identify potential genetic conditions, then it would not be considered frivolous. However, in this case, trait selection is used for gender identification and certain “desirable” traits. How is this ethical? Teleological ethics may be able to rationalize trait selection. They could claim that trait selection would prevent children from being born with chronic conditions, and they could claim that trait selection would end the suffering of children. They could claim that trait selection could enhance a bond between children and their parents by giving the parents a “perfect” child. In contrast, deontological ethics would consider trait selection as murder. If a fetus is undesirable, then it is destroyed. They may even see the potential for a society of “created” beings as detrimental. Discrimination would go much farther than it is even right now. People may get discriminated against based solely on their genetics. I also agree with the book on page 254 that we do not yet know enough. We could very well be on a slippery slope of a new onset of diseases that we inadvertently my messing with genetics. As far as sex selection, I believe that this too is unethical. Why wouldn’t a country raise up a genetically modified army of men for purposes of war. 2-After reviewing this article and both doctors’ perspectives I agree with Dr. Hughes that the idea of this topic to be absurd. I believe that trait selection is frivolous but not unethical because I don’t believe it is breaking ethical codes but, I do believe it to be frivolous and absurd. I belive that IVF and sex selection should be sourly based on helping fa,Ilya with genetic disorders and or families that can not naturally conceive a child and not to pick out what they wish their child looks like. I believe that this type of science should be directly devoted to helping families who have diseases and or genetic issues, because these families have no other options when they have come to this point. I also belive that sex selection will cause bigger issues such as devaluing some groups and cause many social issues. I believe this type of science should be advancing in a way that helps specific families that truly need this help and not to let families choose what their child looks like. IVF is a very hit or miss procedure for many families and a very costly program and I don’t believe that families that want to pick their children’s traits should be taken away from families that truly need this type of science to have a child. A family that is resorting to IVF is a family who has been hurt by either the women or the many not being able to conceive and I don’t think it is moral of other families to take advantage of this science and use it in ways to modify their children. This is not natural nor should be allowed. SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE NURSING MDA 2410
