The parents looked worried because nothing they tried helped the child calm down. However, the RN approached the child, acknowledged her upset, and engaged in a conversation. The child was still crying as the nurse asked about her favorite toys; she brightened up and started talking. Later, I learned that the child was crying because she hated injections, but the RN made the experience bearable for the patient. This changed my perspective on attending to each child’s needs. The implementation competence I have experience with as an LPN is communication. Each patient is unique, therefore, should be attended to separately. Communicating with patients is the best way to learn the things affecting them. They also learned to trust me and discuss things they would generally conceal from other nurses. I encourage patients to mention every little detail about their health even when they think it might not be necessary. Communication has allowed me to work with patients to provide them with the best care and treatment processes. The implementation competence I plan to develop in this course is leadership. Throughout my career, I want to take up a leadership position where I can teach nurses different strategies for helping patients. A leadership position will also allow me to become a role model to other nurses. It will allow me to encourage other nurses to work in groups and consult with each other when faced with challenges. It is the best way to meet the needs of patients continuously. I also believe that becoming a leader will help allow me to ensure nurses are in the right mindset when attending to nurses. student two KAILEE When my grandfather was passing away, it was my first experience of death in my immediate family. I was overwhelmed with emotions, but the nurses that cared for him were so attentive and doing everything they could not only for him, but to comfort his family as well. One nurse in particular, had this calming and compassionate presence that even though the situation was sad, her being able to take it all and provide comfort was reassuring and I will always remember that.A competency I have experience with as an LPN is leader. This may sound counter-intuitive for the experience of an LPN rather than an RN, but in the home health as well as the school setting I am the only medical professional present which means that I am looked upon for guidance surrounding patient care and any medical issues or emergencies that may present. A competency I wish to develop during my education and as an RN is becoming more of an innovator. Developing my knowledge and skills to be able to provide for the sickest and most medically-fragile pediatric patients is a goal for myself and future career. In doing so, I need to be a part of a team that is doing ground-breaking things within this field of nursing/medicine. Innovation is learning new and better ways to provide the safest and highest quality of care. SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE NURSING NUR 101
