how would you respond to this? In the United States we are required to have health insurances. This is monitored yearly when I it is time to file taxes. In the past if an individual did not have health insurance you were charged and it would affect your income taxes. In the past few years there have been a lot of changes to health care policies to help improve the number of individuals who are uninsured. One of the health care policies is the affordable care act. The ACA works goal is to lower health care cost, offer affordable health/ preventative services, and increase the access that individuals have to health coverage (Mason et al., 2021). Healthcare reform was put in place to help decrease the number of individuals without any insurance. Within the first two years of ACA service the uninsured rate decreased by 9% amongst African Americans and 12% amongst Latino Americans. We must also take into consideration when I an individuals is employed and receives health insurance they are required to pay out of their check every two weeks plus if they do not receive care within their health insurance network there are additional fees. In 2021 health and human services/ Biden administration began working on the policy of no surprise bill this took affect in the beginning of 2022. This policy was implemented to protect individuals without insurance and those with insurance who may receive care out of network from being blinded sided by the cost of care (Centers for Medicaid and Medicare services, 2022). The ACA, HHS agencies, and NIH have created policies to help improve health amongst minorities (Mason et al., 2021). In the vulnerable population many individuals can not afford healthcare benefits or according to the county requirements do not qualify for Medicare or Medicaid. Hospitals in northeastern Ohio such as Cleveland and surrounding areas are helping individuals without insurance by now offering their own income-based insurance. This allows for individuals to still receive care at a discounted rate. If individuals are not able to obtain insurance this will affect their health. For example, preventative disease processes that can be assessed during an annual physical exam. One thing that nursing can do to help is to educate. Educate patients, staff, leadership, and their community. A lot of times individuals are not aware of what is going on and how it affects them in the long run. This will help increases awareness amongst staff, patients, leadership, and the community. In conclusion, there are policies and procedures in place to help improve the number of individuals who lack healthcare each year.
