HOME WORK ASSIGMENT 2 The first study I found was called, “The effect of oral care intervention on oral health status of intubated patients in the intensive care unit.” This study was conducted to determine the effect of oral care on the oral health of patients who are intubated and in the intensive care unit. The study found that oral care was associated with a decrease in the incidence of oral and dental problems in these patients. I chose this study for my project because the results suggested that the oral health status of intubated patients had worsened, despite routinely oral care intervention using chlorhexidine gluconate. This gives a specific perspective for the project as oral health was not improved even with oral care being done. The second study I found was called, “The preventing effect of oral self-care on pneumonia death among the elderly with tooth loss, the oh saki cohort 2006 study.” This study was conducted to determine the effect of oral care on the incidence of pneumonia in elderly patients with tooth loss. The study found that oral care was associated with a decrease in the incidence of pneumonia in these patients. I chose this study for my project because the study discussed how the risk of the pneumonia mortality rate was increased among participants having 10-19 or 0-9 teeth. This shows that poor oral health leads to pneumonia occurring and emphasizes the importance of giving patients oral care before and during intubation. This article will help my project by showing a study on elderly patients. The third study I found was called “The Effect of oral care in reducing the incidence of early onset ventilator associated pneumonia in the preterm infant.” This study was conducted to determine the effect of oral care on the incidence of pneumonia in preterm infants. The study found that oral care was associated with a decrease in the incidence of pneumonia in these infants. I chose this study for my project because the study was able to prove the effect of oral care in reducing the incidence of VAP in preterm infants. It gives my project another point of view to look at, emphasizing how oral care affects patients of all ages and why it is such a vital issue in the healthcare community. The above three studies all suggest that oral care can play a role in reducing the incidence of pneumonia. This is significant because pneumonia is a leading cause of death in both the United States and globally. By reducing the incidence of pneumonia, we can potentially save thousands of lives each year.
