Working in healthcare, both at the bedside and in the outpatient setting, has shown me how communication, or the lack thereof, can shape a workplace and its employees. After looking at the video, it is easy to see how other people’s opinions can sway a group, as well as how easily bullying can occur in the workplace. The video also shows how following the crowd can result in a final action that affects the entire group and how some decisions cannot be undone. The video also made me think about how someone can realize an error has been made but also how that realization can sometimes come too late. I would say that a work setting and ability to work with groups of personnel depends on who are a part of the team and their level of emotional intelligence. Roussel et al. (2020) listed the main competencies as communication and relationship building, knowledge of the healthcare environment, leadership, and professionalism. Of the four listed, communication and relationship building, and professionalism take the front seat. Communication and relationship building includes the subcategories of effective communication, relationship management, and influencing behaviors (Hughes et al., 2022). This encompasses communicating with clarity and integrity, building trust, identifying internal and external political forces, and practicing transparency and truth telling (Hughes et al., 2022). Professionalism has the subcategories of professional accountability, profession accountability, advocacy, health, equity, and social determinates, and governance (Hughes et al., 2022). As a sum, these two competencies allow for all persons in the workplace to communicate in a fashion that ensures all are aware of the current state of the department as well as doing so in a professional and productive fashion. With good communication and professionalism, even the most disgruntles employee can have a constructive conversation to find a suitable resolution.
