Aging is a process that happens to

Aging is a process that happens to every single one of us. There are physiological, biological, psychological, environmental, social, and behavioral changes that make up the aging process and can affect individuals differently. There can be small benign changes such as graying of hair or skin becoming wrinkly, and there are declines impacting functioning such as illnesses or physiological issues. Aging can cause an increased susceptibility to disease, frailty, or disabilities. Advancing in age is a major risk factor for chronic disease in humans. (Understanding the Dynamics of the Aging Process, n.d.). The vulnerabilities that come with the aging process such as memory problems, frailty, behavioral changes, and sensory issues such as hearing, and vision changes can all make the individual more susceptible to being abused. Being impaired mentally, physically, or socially can increase the patient’s chance of being abused at home and in nursing facilities or care centers, making it important for nurses to be aware of all the signs that abused elderly will present. These signs include the patient being withdrawn, isolated, unexplained burns or bruises, bed sores that were preventable and being under or over medicated regularly. Also, being aware if they are mentally intact, have dementia or memory issues is important because they may not be able to tell you how they are treated where they are living. Assessing their mental status, their skin, their medications, social interactions, and their head-to-toe assessment can be very different from a middle-aged patient who is being abused. Most of the time, elderly will not be able to defend themselves, however, middle-aged patients who are being abused may try to defend themselves, leaving different signs. These can include cuts, bruises, broken bones or dislocated joints, untreated injuries, and stories that don’t match up with the patients’ symptoms. Middle-aged patients may try to hide that they are being abused and being able to determine the signs of crucial for nurses to secure their safety. (Merel, 2022). Even though many middle-aged patients may not at first appear to be a victim of abuse, it is likely to happen to anyone and making sure the nurse is aware and able to determine the signs is important for their safety.
