REPLY TO A DISCUSSION BOARD The purpose
REPLY TO A DISCUSSION BOARD The purpose of my research is to determine how transgenerational trauma experienced by Black birthing people’s decision making on maternal health care utilization, specifically their choice of perinatal health care providers, birthing location, and birth planning. So the that should be at the end of my research, is how does transgenerational trauma affect Black birthing, people’s decision making on maternal health care utilization? Research would be done with a mixed-methods study, a combination of surveys, one on one interviews and case study research. Women will be recruited through social media ads, word of mouth, and in-person recruitment at OB/GYN’s and Birth centers. Participants in the study will have to self-identify as a Black person, U.S. resident, 34 > weeks pregnant or 3 months postpartum, and ages range between 20 – 35 years. After women are selected from the survey results, participants will be interviewed to share their personal experience. The survey will be measuring four specific pillars: (1) decision making strategies for perinatal health care providers, (2) birthing location and birth planning, (3) access to pregnancy and postpartum support resources, (4) desired approaches to pregnancy and birth. In the interview (lasting about 30 – 60 mins) the survey answers will be reviewed and furthered explored why each specific choice was made. As well as perceived experiences with racism in healthcare and past down advice from Black family members’ perspectives on birthing and the affect or lack there of it had on their decision making. Lastly, I will use case studies to compare to my findings to draw my conclusions. Examples of case Studies to be used: Deichen Hansen, M. E., James, B. A., Sakinah, I., Brown Speights, J.
