The aging process is a normal part

The aging process is a normal part of life. It is an inevitable part of human existence and all individuals who live to grow old, experience this process. Therefore, there are numerous physical and sometimes, cognitive changes that take place in the body that can lead to the development of health issues. For instance, bones become more weaker and brittle, and muscles tend to lose mass and strength. Therefore, the bladder may lose its’ elasticity, causing frequent urination. Sensory impairments may include changes in vision and hearing. Changes in the heart are also common as the heart and blood vessels stiffen with age, causing the heart to put more effort to pump blood through the rest of the body, increasing the risk of high blood pressure and other cardiac problems (Paradox & Alic, 2020). Physically, the skin begins to become thinner, less elastic, drier, and finely wrinkled. However, there are certain characteristics in aging that heightens the risk for elder abuse. As people age, they may need the help of other to manage their care and finances. Elderly people are mostly abused due to lack of support, depression, burdensome and emotional stress by the caregiver. They can also be taken advantaged of and be used for financial exploitation. This is especially valid in cases of those who have Alzheimer’s or dementia, as these conditions cause a decline in mental functioning. For instance, the elderly person may be misinformed with signing certain documents that may cause them to lose money or property (Hafemeister, 2003). Due to mobility issues, the elderly person may be bed bound. However, they can be left neglected in bed for days and be socially isolated. This can put them at risk for depression and skin breakdown.
