1) Topic: Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety in health care This group presentation should involve the four (4) topics listed below. Students do not have to align their presentations in the order of the topics listed below. However, all topics should be covered in the presentation. Subtopic 1. Socioeconomic, political, and historical implications on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people’s health. Based on the historical, political, and socioeconomic factors, students should reflect on how the western systems and structures affect Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and their engagement with current services. Subtopic 3. Demonstrate awareness of own cultural bias Students share their own cultural aspects and evaluate their bias when caring for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in the group. Students may discuss common stereotypes related to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders. It would be preferable if the cultural aspects for each group were different. It would help with sharing cultural information among your peers. Subtopic 4. Discuss ways to improve cultural competence at the workplace and enhance a safe environment for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people Students should brainstorm and develop strategies they should use at the workplace to avoid cultural bias and enhance a safe environment for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients.
