The behaviors associated with horizontal violence can be damaging to the nurse, disruptive to the unit, and may even pose a threat to patient safety. It is difficult to imagine that this type of behavior occurs among nurses when the common core values in a hospital setting often center around respect and dignity to all individuals, compassion, empathy, and dedication to providing a safe environment that promotes healing. The joint commission (2008, as cited by Becher, J., &Viscovsky, C. 2012) states that poor communication within the health care team can compromise patient safety and is one of the leading factors associated with sentinel events. The added stress brought on by disruptive behaviors or expecting conflict can interfere with the nurses’ care and cause unnecessary distractions.
