Case 6: To Intervene or Not? Margaret,

Case 6: To Intervene or Not? Margaret, a registered nurse, is visiting her mother, a patient in a long term care facility. Upon hearing raised voices in the next room, Margaret leaves her mother’s bedside to investigate. She witnesses a female nurse shouting at a patient. She told him that that he wasn’t doing enough to help her when she tries to move him. She says “You are making my day difficult. You could co-operate if you wanted to. You need to change your attitude”. When the nurse leaves the room, Margaret goes in to see if the patient is all right. This patient is a 60 year old man with Guillain-Barré syndrome. Most of his body is paralyzed, but he does have minimal function in his upper body. He tells Margaret that “everything is okay.” He does not want her to discuss the event with anyone on the unit. He says, “It’s easier this way. I’m totally dependent on the staff here, and the nurse didn’t hurt me. She’s just overworked.” SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE NURSING NURSING 110
