She is also not without controversy as she was a eugenist. Sanger did not become a nurse until the 20th century and this week is on 19th-century nurses. Sanger faced multiple arrests and scrutiny for being a birth control activist. She believed that women should have choices on what to do with their bodies and childbirth. She was a voice for many women who believed they had no rights or choices regarding sex and childbirth. Regardless of if you agree with Sanger’s beliefs or not, she was a feminist who made significant changes in healthcare. Today birth control and sex education are more common than ever. Sex, childbirth, and sex education are no longer the taboo subject they used to be. I believe we can thank Margaret Sanger for this evolution in healthcare.
