What went well or as planned? There were three positive outcomes that I was able to identify from my teaching plan, family involvement, motivation, and use of resources. My lesson plan application went smoothly with the family members (father, mother, and three children), who were eager, interested, and involved in the teaching. One advantage I had when dealing with the family is their ability to read, understand and share ideas clearly because they have college or at least high school education. This helped them understand the risks associated with obesity because they had prior knowledge about the effects of obesity, with the father having had encounters with prehypertension and prediabetic crisis. The family was interested and involved in the process of learning and making lifestyle changes, including healthier eating choices, more physical exercise, and other topics. They had an open attitude towards the suggested local resources and material that was provided to them and asked questions during the entirety of the session. They voiced a desire to make adjustments that would be advantageous to their health and came to an agreement that they would begin to increase the amount of physical activity they do each week and monitor the daily calories. The two teenage high school children were happy to start their physical activities and games in school to aid them in achieving their set weight loss goals. As I followed-up today, the family has since registered with the YMCA gym and they are pleased with the exercise timing which works with their busy schedules. They are yet to schedule an appointment with the dietician, but they were pleased to know that their insurance will help them cover the cost. The family was happy with the proximity of available resources near their home and expressed their gratitude for the referrals. They were motivated to start working on their goals. 2. What were the negative results? What did not go as planned. All members of family A were affected by obesity and did not feel comfortable addressing some related topics, such as heredity or the mental health concerns that are associated with obesity. Although they were motivated during our initial discussion, it became abundantly clear that they felt uneasy when discussing these topics; consequently, the parents felt they had failed to manage their weight, and this has also affected their children. This affected the execution of my teaching plan because these discussions led to negative results of the teaching plan or initial adoption. I was forced to modify my strategy to accommodate this reality by shifting my attention to topics that were more generally applicable rather than delving too deeply into any one field. I think due to these modifications to my lesson plan approach, I may have been less effective than I would have been if I had provided the family with a complete education on all elements of obesity prevention and management. Family A is also struggling with financial challenges, which forces the mother and father to work extra-long hours to meet their financial needs. This affected the availability of time for engaging in healthy physical activities or preparing healthy foods in thepast. 3. How would you do it differently in the future? In the future, I would be sure to provide additional resources to family A and those who are not comfortable discussing certain sensitive topics related to obesity so that they can gain access to information outside of our meeting if that becomes necessary. This would have been of great help to accommodate family A, or similar families who are uncomfortable discussing sensitive health topics such as obesity. The culture of family A also seems to play a role in their obesity, I will study the culture and beliefs of families before designing any teaching plan so that I can tailor and address sensitive topics effectively while being culturally sensitive. In addition, a greater amount of time would be devoted to designing a tailored treatment plan for each individual member of the family to guarantee that their specific requirements are effectively met. This might contain a comprehensive list of recommendations for changes in lifestyle, dietary alterations, and physical activity objectives that are customized to the specific circumstances of every individual. I would also incorporate more motivational interviewing techniques into the conversation in order to engage the family members in a meaningful way and assist them to begin focusing on how they can make positive changes in their lives. This would be done to accomplish all the goals. Lastly, I would find ways to address family A’s financial situation which is an obstacle to meeting the weight loss goal. For example, I would refer them to more resources to ease their financial burden so that they can focus more on their goals rather than working those extra-long hours. In the future, I would also offer stress management skills referrals. SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE NURSING NURS 2011
