A past survey estimated that about 60-65% of U.S. nurses work 12-hour shifts, while less than a third work 8-hour shifts,s and the remaining percentage work 10-hour shifts or a combination of shifts (National Center Biotechnology Information 2016). There is an underestimation of the toll of long work hours and their effects on patient safety and satisfaction. In the wake of the trial of RaDonda Vaught, a 38-year-old Tennessee nurse, which resulted in a sentence of three years supervised probation with judicial diversion. The diversion option allows first-time offenders to have charges dropped and their records expunged once they successfully complete probation. Vaught faced a potential sentence of up to eight years imprisonment (Nashville Tennessean, 2022). She was guilty of two charges, criminally negligent homicide and abuse of an impaired adult after a medication error contributed to the death of a patient in 2017(Nashville Tennessean, 2022). The incident occurred when Vaught was supposed to give a sedative, Versed, to a patient for a brain scan for a subdural hematoma prior to discharge since the patient’s condition had improved from her initial admission scan. However, Vaught removed the incorrect drug from the Pyxis and did not read the label. She reported the order had not crossed over to the Pyxis and when she typed in Versed, she accidentally picked the first medication that come up on the screen. She was in a busy area without a “no talk zone” designated sign. She further stated, there was no place to scan the medication before giving it to the patient (CMS Anonymous Complaint Intake, 2018) and she accidentally gave a dose of Vecuronium, a powerful paralyzing medication, by overriding the Accudose dispenser ( State of Tennessee, 2019) district attorney’s discovery. The drug left the patient brain-dead. The patient died after being disconnected from a breathing machine.
