Holistic health is an approach to wellness that addresses the physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual components of health (St. Catherine University, 2022). Holistic nursing considers all the elements that form an individual so that nurses can provide personalized care. Dementia is a chronic and terminal condition with numerous consequences on a patient’s life (Rodriguez et al., 2020). Management of this disorder is a multidisciplinary effort (Rodriguez et al., 2020). Providing a holistic approach to caring for patients with dementia means that providers will need to be knowledgeable about the biological causes of dementia and how the pathology is associated with the disease (Rodriguez et al., 2020). Negative behaviors are common in persons with dementia including agitation, aggression, repetitive behaviors/vocalizations, wandering, and apathy (Alzheimer’s association, 2021). The biggest struggle many dementia caregivers face is that dementia patients frequently lose the ability to communicate their feelings constructively because their brains begin to lose the connections (Intriago, 2021). These behaviors increase caregiver burden and stress, levels of depression and anxiety in pts. and caregivers, and can lead to caregiver burnout, institutionalization, and increased health care cost (Alzheimer’s association, 2022). Examples of treatment that could be deemed beneficial to patients suffering from dementia are cognition rehabilitation, meditation, reminiscence therapy and communication treatments. Cognitive rehabilitation is a goal-oriented, problem-solving behavioral therapy aimed at optimizing the ability to function in everyday life in relation to the person’s needs, wishes, and preferences (Sikkes et al., 2020). Meditation have been shown to improve cognition, well-being, and health in older age and may contribute to delaying the onset of dementia (Sikkes et al., 2020). Reminiscence therapy is the ability to recollect and share personal memories. The recollection aims to promote cognition, communication, identity, mood, social connectedness, mental health, well-being, and quality of relationships (Sikkes et al., 2020). Communication treatments aim to maintain or improve quality and quantity of meaningful communication interactions. These treatments can be divided into direct and indirect treatments (Sikkes et al., 2020). There are numerous types of treatment options available that are non-pharmacological to help patients suffering from dementia. It is important that researchers collaborate effectively with the government and non-government officials to design and carry out rigorous studies within existing service frameworks to aid our patients with this disorder (Sikkes et al., 2020).
