Reply to this post giving advantages of telehealth in nursing Telehealth has always been an area of healthcare that is underutilized. Throughout my research, I have found that telehealth has been in existence for years, but it has not been available or utilized by the general public. Patients had difficulties getting appointments on their days off, or sometimes they would have to miss work to fit in a doctor’s appointment. I have also found out that having a telehealth visit is an out-of-pocket expense because many insurance companies did not pay for the visit. I experienced this firsthand after trying to see a doctor at the beginning of the pandemic. I paid $100 because my insurance did not cover telehealth visits. It was not until the pandemic that telehealth gained more traction and more patients are opting for this option (www.telehealth.hhs.gov). Now that the pandemic is over, I have noticed that telehealth visits are not commonly offered to patients, and it is back to the waiting rooms. Currently, all cell phones have a camera as one of their functions, and more medical facilities are offering access to patient portals. However, they do not have the function to have a telehealth visit with the physician. I will be looking at ways to maximize the telehealth option for patient care, and how it will help to have better outcomes for patients with chronic health conditions. Take for example and patient that is newly diagnosed with hypertension, they should be in contact with a doctor more than every 3 months. When a patient is in the hospital, we check their blood pressure and pulse at least once per shift. When the patient is sent home, they are given anti-hypertensives but no way to check to see if the dosage is therapeutic and if there are any abnormal changes that might not be picked up during a scheduled visit. To fully capitalize on telehealth, there have to be significant changes in securing patient data to prevent any compromise with patient information. Not having the patient in a private area when a visit has started can cause sensitive information to be overheard, and also if the patient is using unsecured WIFI patient information can also be stolen. Now that the pandemic emergency is over, many healthcare professionals have to check with their insurance to make sure that they are covered by the telehealth services provided. The provider also must comply with HIPPA guidelines to store patient information, and they must be aware of any state laws that are associated with it (www.telehealth.hhs.gov). Telehealth continues to be a leader in patient care; hopefully, we have learned a lesson from the pandemic and continue to advance with telehealth. SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE NURSING NURSING BS N494
