The United States health care system can
The United States health care system can be explained as a mixed system, with medical insurance assistance provided by the government or other organizations to qualifying Americans, and private insurance that is paid for directly by an individual. In addition, governmental agencies and nonprofit organizations provide limited resources to the public at the federal, state, and local level. Private health care provides specialized and individualized care in all types of settings and environments (Green, 2018). No matter what type of insurance an individual has, health-care resources must be paid for and funded at some capacity to pay health-care workers, resources, and supplies. Federal taxes fund public insurance programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Tricare. Private insurance can be provided by employers or paid for by an individual. An individual is often expected to pay a deductible before insurance will start to pay for health-care services. The Affordable Care Act was enacted in 2010 to ensure all Americans had access to affordable healthcare and helped increase the number of people medically insured. Despite these facts, the United States spends more on health care services than any other nation. The U.S. health care system is not sustainable. It is expensive, unequal to access, and average in patient care and health outcomes. American citizens are waiting until the last minute to address their health due to being unable to afford it; therefore, there is more focus on acute care than health promotion which results in overall poor health and well-being. Creating a community health system based on health promotion and prevention and eliminating social determinants of health that result in health inequity. If we focus on quality vs quantity costs will go down and we should see more positive outcomes. Providing universal health coverage to everyone is a goal of the World Health Organization. This would give everyone access to equal health care without worrying about being able to afford it (International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes, 2022). Although everyone deserves quality health care, I believe that this may also overwhelm the health care system. We are already facing shortages of health care staff and resources. This type of health care reform would force all stakeholders to work together and have the same goal. This may become a challenge as well and would not be successful. It is unlikely that every stakeholder will agree on everything or have the same goal which would result in power struggles. Please reply to this DQ with 2-3 recent references less than 5 years .
