reply to this post giving the importance of policies in healthcare informatics Informatics and public policy have to be looked at to protect patients rights. Public policy has been implemented to protect the patients, their rights, and their information as health technology use has increased over the past 30 years. Politicians along with local, state, and federal bureaucracy have been involved in shaping the way data is accessed, used, and shared (Bell, 2018). The reasoning behind such policy is to protect the patients best interests while protecting providers at the same time; some examples are: Affordable Care Act, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and HiTech (Bell, 2018). A good example of the use is the recent global pandemic of Covid 19. Without having these policies in place it would have created a bottleneck in data sharing for research and treatments during the unknown stages of the pandemic. The policies implemented in HiTECH created a meaningful use caveat that rewards use of technology in patient care, and penalizes those not using an EHR system. Meaningful use is important when looking at large pools of data. While implementation of new policies can be difficult, the benefit of increasing data sharing, use of evidence based practice, and positive patient outcomes are directly related to public policies (Sweeney, 2017).. It takes a collaborative effort to create policy, regulation, and includes not only politicians but also the healthcare providers. It is important that the patient is not overlooked when the data is used and that it doesn’t drive care provided without adding the human touch. The future of nursing informatics is on the rise. Nursing informatics can bring the human touch part of nursing, aligned with increasing patient health technology use while simultaneously protecting the patients data per the policies. While doing all that they can provide the best evidence based care to the patients and impact positive patient outcomes. These are items that have to be considered when creating new policies. With the increase in overall technology in this day and age it is essential that healthcare harnesses the technology and meld it into providing patient care; as that comes to fruition, policies will need to be identified, created, and implemented to provide the best patient outcomes from the technology use.
