As individuals grow and develop, they are exposed to a variety of factors, which may have significant effects on their health status. These factors may include their living condition, the environment surrounding their childhood and growth, or even the resources through which they meet their personal needs. In instances where these factors are unfavorable, they may predispose the individuals to ill health. These factors describe what scholars refer to as the social determinants of health (Gomez et al., 2021). These determinants of health may contribute to the development of disease for instance, regarding the resources through which individuals meet their needs, in instances where these resources are limited, it becomes difficult for individuals to afford basic needs such as a healthy diet or medical services. This may eventuate in ill health as poor dietary consumption has been linked with such conditions as obesity or malnutrition. On the other hand, the inability to afford healthcare services makes it challenging for individuals to utilize disease prevention services, which may contribute to ill health. Therefore, the social determinants of health, in unfavorable conditions, may cause inequalities, which may contribute to disease development. Pertaining to the concept of the communicable diseases chain model, the idea is designed to represent the cyclic relationship existing between a disease agent and the host and the role the environment plays in ensuring this relationship results in disease development (Edemekong & Huang, 2021). Understanding this concept may help nurses prevent disease because by guiding them on the path of disease development, they can formulate strategies to break the link within the communicable disease chain resulting in disease prevention. For instance, a nurse can facilitate the vaccination of the vulnerable population against a specific disease to boost their immunity to prevent the development of the disease. Moreover, by understanding the chain of transmission, nurses are made aware that such environmental measures as promoting hygiene may help in eradicating the disease agent thereby preventing disease development. Thus, an understanding of the communicable disease chain model is essential for disease prevention.
