Abstract: In order to find out how patients and the nursing profession are impacted by a shortage of nurses in healthcare institutions, this study will conduct an integrated literature review. Throughout history, there has consistently been a scarcity of nurses, a problem that is evident worldwide. Patients in the health centers will receive subpar care due to the shortage of nurses on staff. What can healthcare executives do to address the issue of understaffing nurses is the primary study topic. A large portion of the healthcare profession is made up of nurses, who are essential to healthcare. According to an article by Nicole Quaranta, there is a growing concern about the shortage of nurses in the healthcare field. Various factors such as an aging population, increased demand for healthcare services, and a high turnover rate among nurses contribute to this shortage (Quaranta, 2024). As a result, hospitals and healthcare facilities are finding it challenging to maintain adequate staffing levels to meet the needs of patients. I utilized a variety of methods to gather and analyze information from existing studies and research articles. This allowed me to gain a comprehensive understanding of my topic and draw meaningful conclusions. The first method I used was conducting a thorough search of academic databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and PsycINFO. I used specific keywords related to my research question like nursing shortage, nurse burnout and nurse shortage patient outcomes to locate relevant articles that would contribute to my literature review. By utilizing these databases, I was able to access a wide range of scholarly sources that provided valuable insights and perspectives on the topic. Through my research on this topic, I have found that there is a clear correlation between nursing shortage and negative patient outcomes. Studies have shown that hospitals with lower nurse staffing levels tend to have higher rates of patient mortality, medication errors, and hospital-acquired infections. This is because when there are not enough nurses available to provide proper care, patients may experience delays in receiving necessary treatments, monitoring, and assistance with daily activities. Nurse shortage directly affects the quality of patient care delivered in healthcare settings. With fewer nurses available to provide care, patients may experience longer wait times, inadequate attention to their needs, and increased risk of medical errors. This can have serious consequences for patients, leading to poorer health outcomes and even mortality in some cases. Nurse shortages can also contribute to healthcare disparities among different populations. In underserved communities or rural areas where nurse shortages are more pronounced, patients may face even greater challenges in accessing quality healthcare services. This can result in poorer health outcomes for vulnerable populations who are already at a disadvantage. By understanding the relationship between nurse shortage and patient outcomes, healthcare providers can work towards implementing policies and practices that ensure equitable access to care for all patients.
