By integrating a structured nurse mentor-mentee project, especially for new nurses considering leaving the profession, the framework offered practical applications of these essentials. In integrating scientific and humanistic knowledge into nursing practice, the nurse mentor-mentee project acknowledged the biopsychosocial factors influencing new nurses’ job satisfaction and retention. Mentors, as experienced nurses, provided mentees with insights on sciences and humanities, promoting a comprehensive understanding of nursing care. This knowledge transfer not only enhanced the mentees’ clinical skills but also cultivated an appreciation for the holistic nature of nursing, thereby improving job satisfaction and retention rates. The organizational and systems leadership proved to be a bit more challenging since their role is vital to supporting the implementing of the nurse mentor-mentee project. Leaders within the healthcare setting must advocate for and support such programs, recognizing their potential to improve nurse retention. By initiating the nurse mentor-mentee project, it was my role to influence the leaders and demonstrated that their commitment was necessary to creating a supportive work environment that values the development and retention of nursing staff. Therefore, with the acknowledgement that leaders must foster a culture of support and empowerment, reducing the likelihood of turnover among new nurses. Therefore, from a quality improvement and safety perspective, the mentorship environment allowed new nurses to develop their skills under the guidance of experienced mentors. This close supervision provided novice nurses with immediate feedback and support, crucial for developing safe and effective nursing practices. The mentorship program also facilitated continuous clinical practice improvements through sharing best practices and lessons learned between mentors and mentees (AACN, 2011). The project served as a platform for translating and integrating scholarship into practice. Mentors shared evidence-based practices with their mentees, ensuring that the latest research findings were incorporated into daily patient care. This empowered new nurses to engage in lifelong learning and professional development while utilizing technology proficiently to enhance patient care and improve documentation efficiency. Additionally, the project also provided opportunities for mentees to participate in health policy and advocacy. Through this experience, new nurses learned about the impact of policies on patient care and the nursing profession. This exposure promoted safe and effective practice and interprofessional collaboration, encouraging mentees to engage with other healthcare professionals. This collaboration expanded the quality of care provided and improved patient and population health outcomes. The nurse mentor-mentee project emphasized the importance of clinical prevention and population health. By identifying and addressing the health needs of diverse patient populations and focusing on prevention and health promotion, mentees could understand the broader context of their work and its impact on community health, thereby reducing health disparities (AACN, 2011). Through this comprehensive approach that integrates education, leadership, quality improvement, and interprofessional collaboration, the project supported the professional growth of new nurses. It prepared them to assume leadership roles and contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession while addressing the critical issue of nurse retention by detecting early signs of their intention to leave. As I continue to oversee the implementation of the nurse mentor-mentee project, the development of new nurses and the sustainability of the profession remain at the forefront of my goal in the outpatient clinic.
