5-1 This course is the culminating experience of your MPH program, students in consultation with faculty select foundational competencies appropriate to their educational and professional goals. This capstone course project must culminate in a high-quality written product. The summative course project – deliverable 07 will include the completed capstone project report and a presentation. You have three choices for your capstone course project: Option 1 – Program evaluation report of a public health program. Option 2 – Policy statement report about the need for a new policy that has significance to public and population health. Option 3 – Innovative program plan report to address community health initiatives that promote health and disease management in diverse populations. Option 1 – Program Evaluation Report The purpose of a program evaluation is to assess the process and outcomes of a public health program. The program evaluation assesses if the program objectives were met and to note the strengths and weaknesses of the processes used in the program implementation for reliability, objectivity, and fidelity. The evaluation provides information on the program’s effectiveness, cost-efficiency, and sustainability. The evaluator gathers the information to show the effectiveness of the program to stakeholders, the target population community, other public health professionals, and policymakers. The evaluator makes recommendations for future modification, adoption, and replication of the program in other populations and settings. Option 2 – Policy Statement Report The purpose of a policy statement is to advocate a non-professional audience about the need for policy change. Your arguments are made to elected policymakers and their staff about the issue, the need for political action, and the impacts for both the population and the elected official. This is a persuasive report rather than a research paper, although it must contain statistical data and an analysis of policy options based upon a review of the literature. Option 3 – Innovative Program Plan Report The purpose of a program plan is to outline an innovative approach to a population need in the community. The program plan must be fully developed, including the goals, activities, outcomes, and instruments used to evaluate the program. A program plan incorporates the proposed budget with supporting documentation of need and identifies potential funding sources. A program plan should also detail any policies that are barriers as well as those which support the program purpose. Any need for change in the agency or legislative policy should be noted.
