Case Study Julian Abbas is a 23‐year‐old man who was brought into the ED following an accident on his motorbike. His bike skidded on a corner during a brief downpour, and he fell off the bike. The exact nature of his accident was unclear as he was found unconscious, and help was called. He arrived with a neck brace in situ and was conscious on admission. His Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) was 13, and his pupils were equal and reacting to light. He had a laceration on the front of his skull and skin abrasions on his thigh and lower leg with a suspected fractured collar bone (clavicle). He was sent to have a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) taken to detect any damage to the brain, and he was given pain relief for his fractured clavicle. On his return to the ward, it was identified that Julian’s GCS had fallen to 11 and his left pupil was sluggish when reacting to light. The MRI confirmed a fractured skull, and a CT scan was organized. Requirements are to analyze and critically review this case. Using your analytical skills, explore what you may have learnt from this case, and how this will change your practice moving forward. Support your ideas with references derived from the appropriate literature. In a conclusion, come up with a potential cause for the symptoms experienced by Mr. A. and what may have been the reason for the deterioration of his condition and how this could be addressed/managed. Format and structure. In a first paragraph or introduction (250 words), describe how the early detection of deterioration is critical and a key element in the management of a deteriorating patient. Support your information with references derived from the appropriate scientific literature. Then, in a second paragraph (250 words) describe how the accurate observation and reporting of patient reported signs and symptoms including their critical interpretation, as in this case, may have helped to guide an initial nursing assessment, leading to a hypothetical nursing diagnosis. Consider if this observed change and escalating such observations, may have helped preventing the patient from any further deterioration and/or prolonged suffering. In a third paragraph (250 words) provide a possible/potential cause of the observed symptoms and confirmation of your hypothesised nursing diagnosis. In a conclusion (250 words), summarise your findings from this case and what you may have learned from this case. Your conclusion should not introduce new information. In general, each body paragraph should commence with a topic sentence that identifies the main topic for that paragraph. The following sentences should discuss the topic in more detail. The final sentence should summarise the content that you have just discussed and link and connect to the next paragraph.
