Tabitha – Case study 3, Asthma Tabitha is a 13-year-old

Obesity has become a major issue here in North Las Vegas, Nevada. According to Alberga (2019), the obesity rate in my community of Clark County (North Las Vegas) is higher than the national average. Obesity often leads to other chronic health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension. This issue aligns with the national priorities outlined in Healthy People 2030, which attempt to reduce high obesity rates and promote healthy lifestyles for individuals in the community. Thus, making it both a local and national priority. In order to address obesity, strong leadership is required in order to coordinate efforts, secure funding, and advocate for policy changes (Zhao, 2023). There will be a need for financial investments in order to support public health programs and community initiatives dealing with achieving that sought after healthier lifestyle. This will involve collaborations among the local government, healthcare providers, schools, and community organizations. By engaging with key stakeholders (residents, businesses, and educational institutions) this ensures widespread support and participation. Active stakeholders are helpful in terms of making sound decisions, as well as providing long-term sustainability. A key step to this process of overcoming obesity will be centered around cultural beliefs towards diet, exercise, and socioeconomic barriers. In terms of barriers, individuals in Clark County may have limited access to healthy foods and rely on fast food outlets that provide food at a cheaper rate. One step to help with this change would be public education campaigns, which can help shift perceptions and promote healthier lifestyles. As a public health practitioner, I would work on developing and leading a comprehensive obesity prevention program. This would include assessing community needs, designing a program that includes nutrition education and physical activity promotion, and engaging the community through workshops and health fairs. It is important for us to secure funding through grants and partnerships with local businesses and healthcare providers. By building collaborations with schools and community organizations, this will help create supportive environments that enhance healthy living. Overcoming barriers requires us to incorporate educational campaigns and advocate for policies that promote access to healthy foods and safe spaces for physical activity. Monitoring and evaluation are essential to track progress and refine the program. With the collection of data and continuously improving the program, we can ensure it meets the community’s needs. Addressing obesity in North Las Vegas will have a significant impact on community health by promoting a healthy lifestyle for residents of this area for years to come. Imagine you are a member of this community and have this health issue describe. Explain why you feel your needs are met or not met by this classmate’s plans to address them. Describe one more action by this classmate that could better address the issue in their community.
