Examples of diseases and disorders linked by diet include: heart disease, hypertension and stroke, cancer, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease. In this assignment, you will assess your risk for developing one of the chronic diseases listed above and then determine how you can mitigate this risk. It is important to note that this is not an assignment for how to eat if you have the chronic disease, but rather on how to eat to avoid or delay getting the chronic disease. It is recommended that you work on this assignment after you have completed Module 11 and the readings detailed above. Specific Instructions: Start by visiting one of the websites provided and taking the assessment for the condition you may be genetically susceptible to, or are interested in. Cancer Care Ontario – What’s My Risk (if you choose to look at Melanoma, you will have to research the diet connection) Diabetes Canada – Take the Test Heart and Stroke Canada – Assess Your Risk Osteoporosis Canada – Know Your Risk Alzheimer’s Society of Canada Include the results of the assessment in your submission. If you do not include the results of you assessment in your assignment, you will lose marks. For the Alzheimer’s results, provide your answer to each of the controllable risk factors discussed. Which of your risk factors cannot be modified? Which of your risk factors can be modified? One modifiable risk factor is diet. According to the website you visited for the risk assessment, what can you do, using good nutrition, to lessen the chance that you will develop the disease? This can include improving nutrients as well as calories and energy balance. Discuss recent research (in the past year or two) that you found regarding diet and prevention of the disease.
