Stunting has long-term consequences on cognitive development, educational performance, and economic productivity (Dewey & Begum, 2021). Undernutrition is the underlying cause for about 50% of deaths among children under 5, and the deaths are higher in low- and middle-income countries (Victoria et al., 2021). About 21% of children under five years in Zimbabwe are stunted and Manicaland is a mountainous region which is most affected with stunting rate of 40% (Food and Nutrition Council, 2018). The Ministry of Health in Zimbabwe identifies stunting as one of its most serious public health issues affecting children and women. High under five mortalities of 75 deaths per 1,000 live births has been reported, with malnutrition among the top drivers (Zimbabwe national Statistics Agency, 2016). The Ministry of Health and its partners have been implementing a package of intervention to prevent malnutrition in all the regions in Zimbabwe. However, the burden of stunting remains high in the country and highest in Manicaland provinces. Other provinces have progressed quite well for 10 years, but no progress has been noted in Manicaland province. While there is increasing knowledge of the patterns of stunting in Zimbabwe and in Manicaland from the several surveys, there is a gap on identifying the determinants of stunting in Manicaland. Blanket programming which is currently being done in Zimbabwe is not helping Manicaland to come out of the burden of stunting. Previous studies on stunting of children in Zimbabwe, which have been fragmented and limited in geographical scope, have implicated maternal education and height; infant characteristics such as sex, birth weight, and length; HIV status; chronic inflammation; and unhygienic environment to be associated with stunting (Food and Nutrition Council, 2018). There is, however, no robust understanding of the determinants of childhood stunting, nor have the most significant predictors that drive the high stunting levels among the children in Manicaland been identified.
