You are working as a Youth Worker at Indigo Community Services and Health Hub (Indigo) in the region in which you live where you meet Jamie Williams, a 15-year-old male. Jamie was referred to Indigo by his high school teacher as she noticed that he had been becoming increasingly disengaged during lessons and had been frequently missing school. Jamie grew up in a volatile household as his father passed away at a young age and his mother was diagnosed with a severe mental illness. Being the eldest child, Jamie took on the role of being the primary caretaker for his younger sisters and brothers. For the last 3 years, Jamie and his siblings were taken in by their Aunty Hunny as their mother required ongoing care and support. Over the last year, Jamie has turned to excessive drinking and smoking weed as he feels it is the only time he can shut off from the problems in his life. As a result of this, Jamie’s school grades have significantly dropped which has led him to further disengage. During the assessment Jamie expressed that he ‘was not interested in finishing school as he didn’t care and there was no point because he didn’t know what he wanted to do in the future’. You ask Jamie about his current home situation where he reveals that when he does stay over at his Aunty’s apartment, he often sleeps on the couch or in a sleeping bag because of the limited space. Noticing that he said, ‘when he stays over’, you ask him to further explain what he means where he reveals that his Aunty has been nagging him to either ‘go back to school and stop drinking ‘ or ‘move out if he doesn’t stop as she is getting fed up with his behaviour”. Jamie expresses his desire to stop drinking and smoking habits and he has tried multiple times however the withdrawals have led him to engaging in aggression with the people around him. He also communicates that over the past years he has neglected playing cricket, a sport that he loves and wishes to get back into. Not having clarity as to what the future holds, he often finds himself drawn back to these habits and has turned to you for help as he knows a change needs to be made. Q1. Discuss how would apply one youth context (economic) when working with Jamie.
