It’s time to reflect! According to Reflective practice in healthcare and how to reflect effectively, an article posted to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), “reflection allows you to recognize your own strengths and weaknesses and use it to guide on-going learning” (2017, para. 3). We will use the reflection stages outlined in this article to guide our self-reflection activities each week. Every week you will discuss the achievement of one of the End of Program Student Learning Outcomes (EPSLOs). Overview: You will use the stages of reflection with associated prompts to record a video for this week’s topic: EPSLO 1: Use a caring holistic approach to provide and advocate for safe quality care for patients and families in an environment that values the uniqueness, dignity, and diversity of patients. Reflection Prompts: Begin your reflection by telling us what is going well in class and/or clinical? Now, think back to a clinical practice experience where you provided patient-centered care. What, where, and who- the situation: Describe a situation where things went well or wrong What happened? What was the outcome? How did it make you feel- your emotional state How did you feel about the situation? Did the situation make you feel good or worse about being a nurse? Why? Why did it happen- making sense of the situation Did the situation go well or was there room for improvement? Could you have done anything differently- critical review and development of insight Why did it happen—making sense of the situation Is there anything you could have done to improve the situation? Is there anything you did that was important in the situation? What will you do differently in the future- how will this change your practice What knowledge, skills, and/or attitude would you need to better manage a situation like this? Re-enforcement- what happens when you put this into practice How has this situation made you a better nurse? Is there a person who helped in this situation, that may have gone unnoticed or unacknowledged? Video Submission Criteria: Commentary length must be 4-5 minutes long (no longer than 5 minutes) Camera must be on Professional attire must be worn Professional language must be used
