INTRODUCTION Palliative care emerged out of the hospice movement during the 1960’s and became distinctive from hospice as a care strategy in the 1970’s (Clark, 2007). Palliative care can be provided to individuals with serious illness who desire management of symptoms along with “treatment intended to cure their serious illness” (National Institute on Aging, n.d., para 2). The importance of palliative care has recently increased in healthcare. Parekh de Campos et al. (2022) observed that, “the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic along with the growing numbers of older people and of those living with illnesses such as dementia and cancer has culminated in an unprecedented need for palliative care” (p. 40). It is important to keep in mind that chronic health conditions represent a continuum of need and care. At early onset optimizing self-management supports health and patient independence. A chronic health condition may and often will advance – resulting in debilitating, serious illness and possibly death from the chronic disease which requires more intensive engagement of the health care team. What is critical in palliative and hospice care is determining and supporting the patient’s self-care desires. Garfield (2014) noted that death can be “be far more positive—an opportunity for growth and meaning” (para 5). For education to be worthwhile it must be transformative so considering the learning activities in Module D discussed the following two points: 1. How will your practice change after completing the module? 2. Explore what Garfield’s statement about death “be[ing] far more positive—an opportunity for growth and meaning” means to you?
