Before reading the information on the FDA site, I viewed taking dietary supplements as a way to fill in for nutrients that are missing from the diet. In other words, they “supplement” the diet. This seems beneficial because it helps people consume a more complete and nutrient diet. With the information from FDA regarding supplements, my views have changed slightly. It still seems that supplements have their place in a diet, but there is more to consider. The FDA recommends maintaining a diet of diverse foods to get all needed nutrients (FDA, 2022). While some supplements have shown to be beneficial, there are yet to be many studies on other substances on the market. The FDA does not approve supplements before they are sold on the market, so there are risks to taking newer supplements that have not been reviewed or tested by the FDA. Because of the limited research and regulation of supplements, I would use supplements as a last resort. I would try to meet my dietary needs through a wide range of foods. If I am unable to do so, I would consult a physician and perform research to decide if supplements are right for my diet. Based on this, dietary supplement would probably be good for individuals who do not have access to a wide range of foods to meet their dietary needs. Supplements may be the only option for certain populations as there is little availability of certain foods with necessary nutrients.
