THIS IS NOT MY WORK. I NEED A RESPONSE TO THIS DISCUSSION BOARD ANSWER. According to the World Health Organization (2023), depression effects many people across the globe and can have debilitating consequences on the lives of patients and their families. Symptoms of depression can be mitigated through self-care (World Health Organization, 2023). Nurse practitioners can educate and prescribe self-care practices such as sleep hygiene, exercise, and cognitive behavioral techniques, to patients to help them understand and manage their health conditions (Flarey, 2024). These principles fall in line with the theoretical framework of Dorthea Oream and her Self-care theory, which stated by Hartweg (2020) represents the idea focusing on an individual’s ability to perform self-care. When considering ways to improve healthcare outcomes the PICOT question (P) In adult patients with depression (I) does regulating sleep by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, (C) compared to not using sleep hygiene techniques (O) decrease depression scores of the PHQ-9 scale (T) within three months, was developed. They type of study being done to investigate the PICOT question would be an evidence-based practice project that will aim to apply findings from a body of evidence (BOE) and implement the findings through adoption of new treatments such as sleep hygiene education and monitoring. The purpose of the EBP project would be to implement practice change to benefit patients in the mental health population (O’mathuna et al., 2023). Determine how you will collect your data and what type of research design will best meet your needs (quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods). The EBP project to be conducted will use a randomized control trial or RCT to test the intervention of sleep hygiene, gather empirical evidence, and reduce bias. Random control trials are appropriate for this EBP project because and intervention is being tested and according to Fineout-Overholt (2023) RCTs are the most rigorous design for intervention questions. This will be a mixed method design as quantitative numerical data and qualitative data such as human experience will be collected (Polit & Beck). Data will be collected through the use of tools such as the PHQ-9 depression scale and self-reporting scales. Discuss your project idea and the population and setting in which the capstone may/will take place. When developing a sampling plan, the target population for this project is adults with depression, who speak English and excludes comorbidities. The accessible population will be adults with depression within a specified healthcare facility. The EBP project will utilize non-probability sampling due to the lack of time and resources. According to Polit & Beck (2021) non- probability sampling is when selection of samples is done by non-random methods. The sample will be selected from a specific accessible healthcare facility. This would be considered convenience sampling a type of non-probability sampling. Methods for collecting data will include the use of quantitative methods such as the PHQ-9 depression scale and questionnaires related to hours and quality of sleep that have both quantitative and qualitative aspects about them. Both the intervention and the control groups with complete a PHQ-9 assessment. The intervention population will be educated on sleep hygiene practices and be required to keep a sleep log of the hours slept and the quality of sleep. The control group will not be asked to modify their sleep habits or receive education on sleep hygiene above what is typically discussed. After three months both groups will fill out a subsequent PHQ-9 form. Analysis of the data can then begin, and correlations evaluated. What principles of ethics may be particular to your study? O’mathuna et al. (2023) explains the ethical principles to consider that include beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy and justice. Beneficence means to doing things in the best interest of patients. In the stated EBP project, the aim is to decrease the depression symptoms experienced by patients though the implementation of standardized sleep education to assist patients in upholding beneficial selfcare practices to improve health outcomes. Nonmaleficence means to do no harm, this ethical consideration is important when evaluating the risk factors of the intervention to be tested, which in this case is sleep hygiene. Autonomy is considered by making sure that the participants are educated on the risks and benefits and are able to make an informed decision to participate in the quality improvement project. Justice is addressed by random sampling. This project is using non-probability sampling techniques, however with in the convenience sample randomization can be utilized to assign participants to the test or control group allowing for more even testing and distribution. O’Mathuna et al. (2023) points out that EBP implementation findings are not meant to be generalizable and are organization specific and suggests that ethical considerations be addressed as they already are in clinical care vs research. This is an important distinction thinking ahead to gaining approval from a review board. It may be considered unethical to with hold beneficial treatment, sleep hygiene practices, in research, however EBP projects do not generate clinical research and should not be judged in the same manner (O’Mathuna et al., 2023).
