Purpose The purpose of this assignment is to design a consumer health mobile application (App). A mobile app is a type of application software designed to run on mobile devices such as smartphones or tablet computers. The app you design must be aimed at a consumer health audience. You will create a simple prototype of the user interface using images and/or descriptions of the user interaction with the application. You are encouraged to be creative and you can incorporate smartphone/device functions that might not currently exist. Refer to resources, readings, and links as well as current consumer health apps available for inspiration. Instructions Your app design must be in the form of a “pitch deck” that you would use to present to an application developer or funding agency. You can use any kind of presentation software (PowerPoint, Google slides, etc.). Each of the items below should be one or two “slides” in your presentation. You cannot have more than 10 content slides. The “cover” and “Reference” slides do not count towards your total. Population: Identify a health concern shared by a group of healthcare consumers that could be improved, managed or monitored using a mobile application. Describe the population of healthcare consumers you are designing this application for and how the application will benefit the users. What health issue will it help address or manage? Audience/User Experience: Identify important characteristics of the intended user of the app you are proposing. Consider and describe age, gender, occupation, health risks, health conditions, etc. Explain why you chose this audience. Identify all special needs, accommodations and/or accessibility considerations for this population. Consider human computer interaction (HCI), digital education experience design, consumer health and usability principles, such as issues with computer literacy, access, expectations, etc., and describe how these will need to be considered in the design. Evidence base: Conduct a small literature search to identify evidence-based health interventions, guidelines or recommendations that you could incorporate into your mobile application. Include literature that supports the use of mobile health applications for the target consumer health population and the intended health goals. Give a short summary for how you incorporated information from the THREE best articles you selected into your design. If appropriate describe how the articles informed the way in which the app will enhance achievement of health goals and health management. App Content and Function: Make sure it has a catchy name which should go on the Cover slide! Describe the overall design and how it works. Clearly list what its functions are and what they are for What content will the consumer find in it? What information will be presented (output) to the user? What information will be entered (input) into the mobile application by the app user? How does the input data relate to the output data? I would anticipate that this may take up more than one slide Privacy/Security: Identify how you will address issues of consent, confidentiality, privacy and security, e.g. two-factor authentication for initial app setup. Visual Prototype: Create a visual prototype of your app using AI image generation tools. The prototype must include two detailed and innovative illustrative images that demonstrate 1) how the app works (its key functionalities) and 2) how it engages healthcare consumers in health education, health actions, and/or decision-making. You may use AI tools such as DALL-E, ChatGPT, Gemini, or any preferred platform to design clear, visually engaging, and creative visuals through descriptive prompts Links to an external site.. The images should focus on dynamic user interactions, for example, completing a health risk assessment, receiving personalized recommendations, or exploring interactive educational content. Avoid using generic screens (e.g., login pages). Each image should be accompanied with a concise written explanation that describes the app’s functionality/features and explains how the app engages healthcare consumers. Additionally, under each image, you should cite the AI tool used to create the image and a brief description of the prompts utilized in the image creation process. Your prototype should effectively showcase how the app is designed to educate, empower, and engage users in their healthcare journey while reflecting creativity and alignment with its intended purpose. Implementation and Evaluation Plan: Identify a brief implementation and evaluation plan for the mobile application. List one specific usability/user experience measure and one specific clinical evaluation measure. How will they be tested? Will you have focus groups test it? Identify a formal implementation plan that you will use for this stage. Explain how implementation of this consumer health app contributes to patient engagement and connected health. How will you specifically evaluate if the needs of users are being met stated as two specific Project Outcomes? Global Health Implication: Describe one best practice for designing consumer health mobile applications that effectively enhance collaboration and communication among healthcare providers and patients, improve safety, and ensure high-quality care in diverse global health contexts.
