A 22-year old patient is admitted through the emergency department for appendicitis. Ryan, the nurse, introduces himself to the patient and notices the first name on the patient’s chart is Andrea. Andrea tells Ryan in this initial interaction that he prefers to be called Andy and identifies as a male. Ryan asks Andy if he would like a note put on his chart and on the whiteboard indicating this preference. Andy asks Ryan to please put a note only on his chart, but to try to refer to him as Andrea when his parents are in the room as they have not accepted his gender identity and it makes them uncomfortable to talk about it. Ryan wants to make sure that the patient’s identification is consistent to reduce the risk of errors and to not cause any confusion, but also wants to respect Andy’s request and identification as a male. 1) importance of the case scenario in relation to nursing practice.
