An ethical code is a formal document that an organization puts in place that states the standards and ethical expectations for the organization. This written document may include ethical values and principles. It will set the standard for the organization. For example, the American Medical Association (AMA) would have an ethical code of conduct for physicians. The written code would spell out the way a physician should act and treat patients. Another example, would be a hospital code of conduct that sets the code or standard for the hospital. All hospital employees would need to comply with the standard set in the hospital code to keep a job at the hospital. It has been my experience that ethical codes have a strong link to professionalism of the group whether it be a professional organization or hospital. For example, provision 6.01 of the physician code talks about contingent fees for physicians. It states that physicians should not charge a fee that is contingent on or based on the outcome of a claim such as a workers comp or malpractice claim.
