Assignment 2: Child Guidance Strategies in Action (35%) Learning Outcomes: *Demonstrate effective strategies for guiding children’s social and emotional development. *Explain the educator’s role in building empathy, friendship skills, and social responsibility in children. *Use assessment tools and social and emotional theory to inform a holistic understanding of children’s behavior. Learning Objectives: The objective of this assignment is for learners to demonstrate their understanding and application of child guidance strategies in a practical setting. Learners will select three child guidance scenarios and use a range of strategies to support social and emotional development, record themselves implementing these strategies in their groups and reflect on their performance in their recorded session. Directions: Part 1: Recording Implementation Plan and execute a recording session where the learner completes three scenarios guiding “the children” to resolution using a variety of methods (2-4) from the course theory and text. You will need to complete this with a group of 3-4 (you will use family or friends as your participants in each role scenario). Video length: 1-3 minutes and labeled Video 1, Video 2, Video 3 for submission. Submit your reflection paper and video individually. Video submissions must be allowable college format, and the use of the Microsoft suite is highly recommended. Please see your instructor for support on submission requirements. Work from other courses cannot be resubmitted in this assignment. In the filming session, the learner will act as the educator while your participants are the children. In a suitable environment such as a playground, or mock childcare Centre, play out the learner educator’s 3 chosen scenarios. During the recording, learners should focus on effectively applying their selected strategies while interacting with the “children”. Each scenario can be preplanned but should include some elements of surprise and should only be filmed once to allow for material to be reflected on. The grading for this part of the assignment will be based on the learner’s ability to be flexible and knowledgeable, in the moment, and to show the use of a variety of child guidance strategies. Select three child guidance scenarios that you have witnessed in your own experience either from practicum or from class/ assignment examples. Include at least 1 friendship skill scenario. These might include: ï‚· Two children fighting over a toy and about to cause physical harm. ï‚· Two children where one child is telling on another for not being ‘fair’ in the play script. ï‚· A child that does not seem to know how to enter play effectively. They upset the play in some way. ï‚· A child that only wants to play with or spend time with an educator. ï‚· A child that wants their own way in play almost always. ï‚· The child that takes toys out of the hands of others and runs away. ï‚· A child that exhibits ‘avoiding behaviors’ when asked to complete an undesirable task (cleaning up, transition, etc.) earner, as the educator, will display 2-4 child guidance strategies from the Continuum Framework or the Textbook – Guidance of Young Children (Appendix) for each scenario to a support resolution and on- going support in the child’s development. These strategies should be based on effective methods for guiding children’s behavior positively and promoting healthy social and emotional development. Example strategies: ï‚· Positive reinforcement ï‚· Redirecting behavior ï‚· Setting clear and consistent limits ï‚· Active listening and empathy ï‚· Problem-solving with children ï‚· Encouraging friendship skills ï‚· Using “I” statements Part 2: Reflection Using course theory, reflect on the following for each video. 1. Description of the Scenario. 2. Using time stamps, label the strategies used: Describe the specific strategy implemented. 3. Share why you chose to use those strategies for resolution. 4. Identify your strengths (at least 1). 5. Identify your areas of growth (at least 1). 6. Share your hypothesis as to what the child or children were trying to communicate through the undesirable behavior. 7. Share 1-2 ideas that you will use to support further social and emotional of the ‘child’ or children in the scenario. This can include an idea to prevent the behavior in the future such as changes to the physical environment, use of the mesosystem and effective communication, on-going social and emotional support interventions such as continued support entering and sustaining play. ************************************************************************************************************************ *Video length: 1-3 minutes for each scenario *Reflection assignment depending on spacing.
