Belonging is a crucial step in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. According to Maslow, belonging is a critical factor in classrooms. When belonging is missing, students struggle to achieve their potential. John A. Powell, the Professor and head of the Othering and Belonging Institute, defines belonging like this: “BELONGING, or being fully human, means more than having access. Belonging entails being respected at a basic level that includes the right to both CERATE and makes demands on society.”(Collaborative, 2019) In other words, belonging is more than just being in a place. It is about feeling like you are a part of that place and have a stake in it. Belonging matters in a classroom because it helps create a positive and supportive learning environment. When students feel like they belong in a classroom, they are more likely to be engaged and motivated to learn. A sense of belonging can also help reduce stress and anxiety, which can interfere with learning. Belonging is essential because it helps students feel safe and supported. Students who feel they belong are more likely to take risks and try new things. They also feel more comfortable asking questions and seeking help when needed. Feeling like they belong in a classroom can also help students build positive relationships with their classmates and teachers. A sense of belonging is crucial for student achievement. When students feel like they belong at school, they are more likely to be engaged in the learning process and to feel positive about themselves as learners. A sense of belonging also leads to increased academic motivation and higher levels of academic achievement. When students feel a sense of belonging in the classroom, it can increase their educational success and motivational outcomes in multiple ways, and teachers can help create this feeling of belonging by building connections between the classroom and community, according to DeLeon Gray, Ph.D (Bowen, 2021). A lack of belonging can impact students academically in many ways. Studies have shown that students who do not feel a sense of belonging are likelier to have lower grades and test scores. They are also more likely to drop out of school. A lack of belonging can also lead to behavioral problems. Students who do not feel a sense of belonging are at an increased risk for mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety. According to Kathleen Ethier, Director of Adolescent and School Health, Centre for Disease Control, Students who feel they do not belong to their school are more likely to miss school, behave in ways that are not congruent with successful academic outcomes, leave school early, and are at greater risk of school-based violence(Allen, 2022). A culture absent of belonging can have a significant impact on students. Promoting a sense of belonging can help students succeed academically, behaviorally, and emotionally. One way to create a sense of belonging is to create a positive school climate. A positive school climate is supportive, respectful, and inclusive. It is also essential to provide opportunities for students to get involved in their school and community. This includes extracurricular activities, service learning, and leadership opportunities. Finally, it is essential to have adults who are supportive and caring. This includes teachers, administrators, and other school staff. SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE NURSING EDUC 477
