The AONL nursing executive competencies discuss the importance of communication and relationship building (American Organization for Nursing Leadership, 2015). These competencies describe the skills, knowledge and abilities that guide practice for nursing leaders. Relationship management involves building collaborative relationships, creating a trusting environment, balancing individual’s concerns with personal goals, and engaging staff in decision making. In the clip with the birds on the wire, several birds that were similar were on the wire. A bird that was bigger and different sat on the wire. The smaller birds refused to allow the big bird to stay on the wire; however, he doesn’t give up. The outcome is that the smaller birds get thrown off the wire and lose all their feathers. Like the clip with the birds on a wire, conflict can arise in the workplace. Working with a lot of different people is not always easy, and not everyone gets along. I had a conflicting matter occur when I was precepting a nursing student. The student would go off and be gone for hours, and I had no idea what the student was doing. I had to call the student on their cell phone and ask them where they went. When I was in nursing school, we weren’t even aloud to have cell phones. This student was always on their phone during the first several days of their preceptorship. Instead of trying to work out a toxic preceptor-student relationship I decided on what to do. I didn’t want to get the student in trouble where they could potentially be dismissed from the school. I contacted his instructor and basically stated that I was not getting along with the student and asked if they could be put with another preceptor. The instructor agreed and placed them with someone else. This was the best decision for the student. I could have gotten the student in trouble but that was not my intentions. The conflict resolution style I used in this example was the compromising style (Benoliel, 2017). This style aims to find a mutually acceptable solution where both parties are happy. I think it takes a lot of bravery to stand up for yourself in a toxic work environment. Communication is key when precepting new nurses. Building trusting relationships with the people you work with can allow for a constructive day and better patient outcomes. Respond by adding new insight and with detail to the response above.
