Factors that contribute to these disparities are variations in quality healthcare, underlying chronic conditions, structural racism, and implicit bias (CDC, 2022). To account for these disparities, Black birthing people should be at the center of developing solutions. Health providers must hear Black mothers, not push us aside and discount us as if our thoughts will and cannot be accepted. As black women, we understand our bodies and what ails them, and thus teaming up with the healthcare team should be unequivocally straightforward (BMMA, 2018). McLemore & D’Efilipino, mentioned that holistic care for our black mothers involves collaboration with the healthcare team; this would be helped by diversification of the healthcare workforce so that clinical teams reflect the populations they serve. It also means better communication of knowledge between patients and their healthcare teams (2019). Holistic care can also be demonstrated by providing care through a Reproductive Justice Framework.
