While our lesson plan was geared towards the caregivers, their clients presented with autism. What types of modifications in oral hygiene education did you utilize? The clients relied on their caregivers to help with their daily tasks, including their daily oral hygiene routine. Our lesson was geared towards educating the caregivers on how they may effectively provide oral hygiene to their clients. This includes different positioning when brushing their client’s teeth, and brushing and flossing methods. The lesson also included different oral hygiene aids and devices used to help caregivers efficiently brush their client’s teeth. These aids included the use of the sage mouth prop and the 3-sided toothbrush. To have the caregivers be more engaged in the lesson we set up typodonts and had them demonstrate how to hold the patient and brush their client’s teeth with modified bass style and C-shaped flossing. The clients also came forward and showed us how to do their oral hygiene routines and re-demonstrated what they learned. How did you feel the overall oral health status was of your group? If you attending multiple homes or the home multiple times, please include date from all homes. We felt that the overall oral health status of the group was fair with the exception of one of the clients in the home. This particular client did not have any teeth and oral care seemed to be almost non-existent. For this client, we suggested that the caregiver use gauze to apply mouth rinse around the oral cavity of the client. Any Additional comments, suggestions, learning experiences? We researched the target audience before giving the OHI presentation and prepared the appropriate training for them. This group visit was a very rewarding experience that really kept us on our toes. The clients and caregivers were very attentive to our lesson and asked many questions that we were not quite used to. This included questions like how to provide oral care to clients without any teeth. We had to think quickly to provide an appropriate answer. One thing we could have done to improve the visit is to bring goodie bags to distribute.
