Case Scenarios You have been hired as a counselor intern for a behavioral health facility that provides counseling services for behavioral health and addiction disorders. Your training will include screening and assessing individuals referred for substance abuse and/or co-occurring disorders and recommending treatment at the appropriate level of care based on the results of your assessment criteria. Choose one of the cases below to evaluate for your portfolio project. You will use this case scenario throughout the portfolio project. Case #2 Anna is a 20-year-old Hispanic female living with her grandparents in an urban neighborhood. She is in her first year of college after working 2 years as a convenience store clerk at night. Anna said she often fears for her safety due to rising crime in her neighborhood. She wants to get a degree in business and hopefully establish a career away from violence and crime. Anna’s boyfriend of 1 year has asked her to “forget school” and wants to get married and have children. However, she wants to wait until she completes college but feels pressure to quit her studies to be a wife and mother to please her boyfriend. Her parents divorced when she was 15. Anna has no siblings and is an only child. She has not seen her father since the divorce, and her mother was incarcerated two years ago for distributing heroin, a controlled substance. She revealed that both parents used drugs in her presence as she was growing up and states that she experimented with alcohol and marijuana during her teen years with her friends but did not use frequently. Recently, Anna has admitted to taking prescription and illicit opioids that are provided to her by friends. She said she only began using the substances recently to relieve the stress of her schoolwork. However, the use of the substances continues to increase in frequency and dosage. Anna says her increasing inability to fall asleep is affecting her performance in school. Anna was referred for assessment for addiction by her grandmother, who has noticed that Anna, despite her excitement about going to college, appears to have lost interest in her studies and is not keeping up with her assignments. She fears that Anna will follow in the footsteps of her mother, but Anna dismisses her grandmother’s concerns. Directions Choose one of the two case studies provided to write a four-page double-spaced paper. In the paper, you will be following the typical steps in the process of screening, assessing, and treating substance use and co-occurring disorders. Your research paper will demonstrate an understanding of addictive behavior symptoms and treatment options that will be explored in the course lectures. The portfolio project assignment will be completed in stages during the entire course. You will utilize the lectures, supplemental materials, and outside research to consider and analyze the clinical assessment process of addiction and the interventions for treatment. You will apply these findings and analysis to your chosen case.
