case study has brought up some interesting

case study has brought up some interesting questions on how we deal with people who might be brain dead and what rehabilitation we might do for them and what we may not do. A moral issue involved in this case is whether should they have left Terry to die instead of keeping him around. In reading this case study we can see that he did come back around but that might not be the same for everyone who comes out of a coma in a brain-dead state. Though there is value in every living thing I would not want anyone in my family to have to go through that or have to choose between life and death. I think that everyone should have some type of living will or have talked to someone in their immediate circle to explain to them what that person may want in these scenarios. This would allow for the person to be there making their own decision if they can not actually be there. Out of the four concepts that help people define and determine death, I think that the most correct answer is to adopt the brainstem formulation. This is because with brainstem death the person is irreversibly unconscious and in a sleeping state. I do not think it would have been morally wrong to end Terry’s life when given his final prognosis because life is supposed to be lived to its fullest potential and when someone is on the brink of death it could feel as though they are already gone. Because he was in a coma then for three months some of his family might have already said goodbye. Once he woke up and was in a vegetative state, it could have been easier to just end his life to stop his and the family’s suffering. This is an interesting case that brings to light important concerns with end-of-life decisions and determining if someone is beyond rehabilitation. Read this case carefully and respond to the questions below. Questions: 1. What are the moral issues involved in this case? 2. Evaluate this case in the context of the four conceptual approaches for defining and determining death. Which definition do you think is correct and why? 3. Would it have been morally wrong to end Terry’s life given the initial diagnosis? SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE NURSING MDA 2410
