Case Study: Mrs. Smith is a 67-year-old woman. She has been married for 45 years and has 3 grown children, who also have families of their own. Mrs. S. has held many jobs over the years, including a schoolteacher in the catholic system, bookkeeper, and real estate agent. Although Mrs. S. has worked outside the home, she still enjoys her role as homemaker and taking care of her family. Mrs. S. has been healthy and had no medical problems until recently. She has been diagnosed with breast cancer. When she was diagnosed with cancer Mrs. Smith began to have some feelings of sadness and depression. She has spent the last week in hospital after having a right mastectomy and will be discharged home with home care. She will have chemotherapy treatment at the outpatient cancer clinic daily for six cycles. She will need a dressing change to the incision site every other day. Although she doesn’t usually take any medication, she has found that she needs medications for pain and nausea since her surgery. She also has a list of exercises that she must perform daily.
