Conservation Coalition Project Assignment Instructions Overview The goal of this Conservative Coalition Project Assignment is to synthesize what you have learned about environmental conservation in relation to human health by developing a hypothetical community coalition to address an identified environmental conservation issue that impacts human health. To do this, you will need to create a professional presentation to visually represent the public health issue [e.g., environmental conservation and the coalition’s goals]. Make sure you apply a systems thinking approach to the presentation. As you develop your coalition, you will need to apply leadership and management principles to address the conservation goals set out by this coalition. Instructions TOPIC; REDUCING SINGLE -USE PLASTICS (POWER POINT 14 SLIDES) You may choose a conservation effort of your own interest or the one you previously selected in the course. That effort/issue should have been approved by your instructor before you started the assignment. Be creative and original; think big—a simplistic project with an overly small coalition will limit your ability to apply the concepts needed to successfully complete this assignment. You will share your efforts in a 5-10-minute PowerPoint or Adobe Spark presentation. (Do not record narration in the presentation.) Here’s a checklist of what you’ll need to include in your PowerPoint or Spark presentation: Part 1: Identify the audience you are targeting for your presentation here. Presentations should also keep in mind the different audience and sectors that make up their viewership. Explain why you have chosen to make this presentation targeted at this particular audience. This implies that you have selected a particular communication strategy to address this particular audience. This preliminary information does not need to be long, but it does need to be intricately and intentionally clear as this is a foundational step for all successful, professional presentations. Part 2: Introduction to the issue. Introduce the environmental issue your coalition will address and present background information about previous and recent conservation efforts to address it. Describe its scope of impact and the populations most affected by it. Part 3: Assessment of need. Provide current research, with statistical support, in which you demonstrate the need for the conservation effort—and therefore, your coalition. Consider the OneHealth approach in identifying needs related to human, animal, and ecological health factors. The link to OneHealth will be located in Module 5: Week 5 as the Learn item, Read: OneHealth. Part 4: Describe your coalition. Use the guide from the Community Tool Box to help you develop your coalition. The link to the guide is located in Module 5: Week 5 as a Learn item, Read: Community Tool Box: Chapter 5. Section 5. Coalition Building I: Starting a Coalition. You may also wish to view websites of existing environmental coalitions for ideas. Include the following in your description: Define the organizational structure and operation of your coalition, including its stakeholder member organizations. Describe the method used to make decisions. Explain how leadership is shared among members. Develop vision and mission statements that express the coalition purpose—why you exist. Whether or not you state this in your mission, provide a biblical rationale for your purpose and activities. Use the guide from the Community Tool Box to help you develop your statements. The link to the guide is located in Module 5: Week 5 as a Learn item, Read: Community Tool Box: Chapter 8. Section 2. Proclaiming Your Dream: Developing Vision and Mission Statements. Describe funding sources and propose a one-year operational budget. Part 5: Outline the actions your coalition will take to address the issue. Explain exactly what your coalition will do to address the environmental issue you described. Your actions must be based on scholarly, peer-reviewed literature, and be consistent with your stated mission. Take the first step yourself by initiating a conservation effort included in the mission of your coalition. Keep a record of your results. Part 6: Applicational Leadership Principles. Your final slide(s)/section of the presentation should be reflective in nature as well as anticipatory. Here, you must address the best practices of leadership and/or management covered in the course thus far and consider how you will apply these practices to garner consensus in a group/coalition to accomplish specific goals. Part 7: Communication Strategies Assessment. As you look back and evaluate your assignment before submitting, you must assess how clear you have been about how you have selected communication strategies for different audiences and sectors as relevant to your proposal here. A Comment on Professional Presentations As a profession, you must follow best practices in the preparation of your PowerPoint or Spark presentation. Follow guidelines and best practices in preparing a Presentation which uses PowerPoint or Adobe Spark. Also, follow these specific rules: Once upon a time, PowerPoint was the best available presentation software on the market. It has now become one of the most basic visual presentation software packages on the market. It is still acceptable professionally—but it would be good and wise to practice with new and unknown products to grow your professional skills and expertise within the confines of the classroom before you reach your vocational goals. The classroom is much more forgiving than a pitch to grantors who often judge once and for all. Note: If you choose something other than PowerPoint make sure you are delivering it to your professor in a way that they can review it. Confirm with your professor beforehand any nuances that might be important for them to know. Use a consistent PPT design, color scheme, font type, and bullet form throughout. Use relevant images displayed properly and do not overload slides. If submitting in PowerPoint, include at least 14 slides and use AMA formatting in-text and end-text references throughout.
