Contributing Factors to a Strategic Plan Provide a brief introduction

In this part you will support a client, Trevor Brown, with shaving. Trevor requires full assistance with shaving due to a severe stroke which has affected his right side (and dominant hand). You will need to follow any directives in Trevor’s care plan and check any preferences he may have when it comes to his shave. You must also adhere to safety procedures, such as wearing gloves etc. The task includes completing one role play and completing the required workplace documentation after the support service is provided. To prepare review the job tasks you are completing with Trevor in the scenario below. Scenario Trevor has been waiting in his bed for you to take him to the bathroom to the toilet, shave, undress, and shower. He’s not very happy or chatty. In fact, he has hated this routine since he had a stroke, and he misses his independence. You have completed the toileting and showering and now you must support him to shave. At the end of the shaving Trevor you turn your back to wash the razor and Trevor slips off the chair and falls onto the floor. He appears to not be injured and is a little embarrassed. This task requires you to complete a role play shaving and responding to a fall with Trevor. To complete the role play you are required to: Follow the Banksia Care procedures for shaving. Follow Banksia Care procedures for fall management. Verbally explain each step you are taking when completing the shaving. Submit a 5-8 minute video recording. Note: Your volunteer will hold the balloon which you will pretend to be Trevor’s face to shave. Ensure your volunteer understands that slipping off the chair is to be simulated and to take care to avoid injuring themselves. On completion of the role play you will be required to complete an Incident, Injury, Trauma, Illness Record form that will be submitted in question 14. During the role play, your teacher will be looking to see that you can: Confirm with Trevor what personal support you are assisting him with as per individual care plan and determine if any additional needs are to be met. Apply a positive approach during your client interaction and assess how much the client can do for themselves. Communicate with the client throughout the process to let them know what is happening and provide them with instructions for what they need to do for themselves. Follow procedures to support the client with shaving. Take action to reduce any hazards or risks identified. Follow procedures when client falls. OP1 Confirm with Trevor what personal support you are assisting him with as per individual care plan and determine if any additional needs are to be met. OP2 Apply a positive approach during their client interaction. This includes: Discuss and include any preferences and wishes in regard to their own capability. Understanding Trevor’s needs. OP3 Communicate with the client throughout the process to let them know what is happening and provide them with instructions for what they need to do for themselves. OP4 Take action to reduce any hazards or risks identified. This includes: Using correct manual handling procedures. Using correct procedures for use and cleaning of razor. Removing trip and slip hazards. OP5 Monitor the support given in collaboration with Trevor. This includes: Confirming any requirements for change. Report or refer as per workplace policies and procedures. OP6 Follow infection control procedures. Follow procedures to support the client with shaving including: OP7 Wash the face with warm water to soften the hair. OP8 Apply the shaving cream or gel. OP9 Shave with the direction of hair growth to avoid causing ingrown hairs and skin irritation. OP10 Press the razor firmly, confirming with the client that it does not hurt. OP11 Use short strokes, and be careful around the Adam’s apple, mouth, nose, and chin. OP12 Rinse the blade after every few strokes. OP13 Use a warm, moist face cloth to remove leftover lather. Then dry the area. OP14 Apply moisturiser or aftershave if the client requests it. OP15 Rinse the razor well before storing it. OP16 Follow procedures when client falls including: Immediately call the shift supervisor. Do not attempt to move or treat client. Stay with client, talking to them and reassuring them.
