Discussion Post Hello Professor and Classmates, A human-patient interface technology that is used widely in healthcare is barcoded identification bands. This is used to identify patients for when they need labs, X-rays, and any other form of testing. The main reason why this was also put into effect was for medication administration and to make sure the 5 rights of medication are completed (right patient, right drug, right dose, right route, right time). This saves errors when administering medication. There was a major error done in November 2007 that almost took the lives of actor, Dennis Quad, newly born twins. They inquired a staph infection a few days after being born where they needed Heparin ( a blood thinner) to be administered. Heparin was administered to the twins and they received 10,000 units twice but the order called for them to receive 10 units. They almost lost their lives. This had brought on awareness and the barcoded identification for medication was installed. It only allows you to take the medication from the Omnicell/Pyxis machine that was ordered.
