Osborne is noted as someone who made changes in maternal/child health. Osborne started as a nurse in a womens hospital in NY and worked her way up to become the Associate Director of the Mississippi State Board of Health’s Division of Maternal and Child Health (Encyclopedia.com, 2022). She advocated for a public health nurse to be employed by each county’s health department and developed standards of training for midwives, dedicating training and education to “granny” midwives. According to Judith Rooks at Suffolk University, “Granny” midwives were emancipated black women that attended the births of black and white women in rural areas (Rooks, 2022). I am inspired by Mary Osborne, she saw an area of maternal health that could be improved upon and took steps to elevate the profession with education and guidelines. Health care is still lacking in very rural areas. Midwives play a large part in getting mothers care in those isolated areas. Osborne went on to develop the Manual for Midwives, which is a manual that includes everything from how a midwife should present herself, equipment required, delivery procedures, and education topics (Osborne).
